Tour De Food: Italia

Growing up in an Italian family, I was always surrounded by amazing food. However, nothing could have prepared me for the delicious cuisine I experienced when I studied abroad in Italy last semester. I lived with a host family so I was spoiled with good food everyday by my host mom! I still haven't tried anything that compares to her green peas!

I picked 11 dishes that remind me of all the amazing meals I ate over the four months I was there, including a pea recipe that I can't wait to try out. As my host mom would say — buon appetito!

Homemade Pasta Dough: This is a basic pasta recipe which can be used for noodles, lasagna, etc.

On the Side Peas: Serve these peas with lamb.

Tomato, Basil, French Mozzarella & Prosciutto Panini: You can substitute hummus or black olive tapenade for the Roasted Red Bell Pepper Tapenade in this great, grilled sandwich recipe.

Pasta Primavera with Caramelized Onions: Why not treat the family to an Italian dinner tonight

Caprese Salad: This simple Italian salad combines refreshing ingredients to make a wonderfully light appetizer.

Lemon-Anise Biscotti: A Sicilian specialty, this recipe produces a relatively hard biscuit -- perfect with an afternoon cup of coffee.

Spaghetti Ala Putanesca: You can either serve the flavorful sauce over the bed of spaghetti or mix it in well.

Baked Clams: Baked clams have become a standard in the Italian-American restaurant repertoire. So standard, in fact, that they have become something of a cliche and are usually represented by frozen, mass-produced little clods of garlic-flavored bread crumbs and rubber bands. Here is how the dish is properly done.

Zucchini Penne: Every year, I try to find new ways to eat zucchini and this recipe is a definite winner!

Chicken & Gnocchi in Pesto Sauce: One night I was getting ready to make dinner and I asked my son Zack what I should make. He said, why don't you saute the chicken, cut it up, make some gnocchi and mix it all together. The rest is history! I added the spices and the last thing was the pesto. It really brought it all together. It's fabulous!

Tiramisu: Wolfgang PuckIt’s easy to understand why tiramisu is Italy’s most popular dessert — not just on Columbus Day, which will be celebrated on Monday, Oct. 9, but year-round. When you’ve got one dishthat combines the flavors of chocolate and espresso coffee with sugar, light spongy ladyfinger cookies, and tangy-creamy mascarpone cheese, how can you possibly go wrong?

eBay Takes Its First Steps Toward Virtual Currency

One small step for Bitcoin, one medium-sized leap for eBay.
Starting on Feb. 10, the UK section of the online marketplace will open a "virtual currency" category within its classified ads for the listing of Bitcoin, as well as its various offshoots — Coinyes, dogecoins and others that have emerged.

Customers will be able to put up listings for virtual cturrencies and conceivably offer them as forms of payment in outside transactions. Purchases through eBay will still need to be in a government-issued currency.
“To promote a trustworthy marketplace and ensure compliance with applicable regulations, eBay is currently updating its Currency Policy," an eBay spokesperson told Mashable in an email. "The updated policy will clarify that listings for Bitcoin and other similar virtual currencies must be listed in the Virtual Currency Category in the Classified Ad format."
The virtual currency category is expected to be available on the UK site by Feb. 10, the spokesperson added.
Exchanges of virtual currencies through physical items — such as USB sticks or external hard drives — have taken place on eBay before. The new category will provide some legitimacy to the offerings and create an informal market for virtual currencies, albeit a very inefficient one.
The eBay spokesperson said that the company would only allow the deals in classified ad formats; the actual transactions would take place outside of eBay. This means no auctions or price-fixed offerings.
The site bills its classified ads as "a great way to list items, services, or properties for sale without creating an auction-style or fixed price listing."
The move by eBay is another step in the creep of virtual currencies, particularly Bitcoin, into mainstream online markets.
The Sacramento Kings now accept bitcoins, as does Overstock.com. Growing acceptance has boosted the value of bitcoins, by the far the most widely accepted and valuable virtual currency.

Groupon Buys Ideeli for $43M in Cash to Get More Fashionable

Groupon has acquired ideeli, a flash fashion sales site, for $43 million in cash.
The acquisition, which was announced on Monday, is intended to expand Groupon's fashion offerings and bolster ties with brands in this space.

“Ideeli extends our fashion presence and brings great relationships with many of the top brands in apparel," Groupon CEO Eric Lefkofksy said in a statement. "Our customers have a demonstrated appetite for these offers, and by broadening our reach in this space Groupon is even better positioned as the place you start when you want to do or buy just about anything, anytime, anywhere.”
The acquisition appears to be a less-than-desirable outcome for ideeli and its investors. The startup had received more than $100 million in venture funding to date. In fact, the company had raised $12 million just last summer, but was said to be struggling to bring in additional funds.

Eric Schmidt's Big Predictions for 2014

It's that time again when everyone makes a few bold predictions for the year to come. This year, Google's executive chairman Eric Schmidt is joining in on the fun.
In an interview with Bloomberg TV about 2014 trends, Schmidt highlighted the growing importance of big data for businesses and the rise of personal genetics. But the key trend, according to Schmidt, boils down to one word: mobile.
"The trend has been that mobile was winning. It's now won," he said in the interview. "There are more tablets and phones being sold than personal computers. People are moving to this new architecture very fast." For that reason, he believes we will see a "new generation of applications" emerge to fill changing needs for entertainment, social networking and more.
Even Schmidt, though, isn't always the best at spotting technology changes coming down the road. In the video, he admitted once again that he completely missed the boat on social media while he was CEO at Google.
"At Google, the biggest mistake I made was not anticipating the rise of the social networking phenomenon," Schmidt said. "Not a mistake we're going to make again. I guess in our defense we were busy working on many other things, but we should have been in that area and I take responsibility for that."

This Resume Alternative Could Land You Your Dream Job

The unemployment rate in the U.S. has been steadily declining since a high of 10% in 2009, but it still hasn't reached the lows seen in the early years of the millennium. At 7% as of November, things are certainly getting better, but they are slow coming.

With a high unemployment rate, you're doing well just to have a job. But how can you land a good, or better yet, your ideal one? According to Joanna Weidenmiller, cofounder of 1-Page, a job proposal platform, the answer is simple: go on the offense.

Instead of sending in a resume in response to a job description, Weidenmiller's platform allows you access to research relevant to companies looking to hire. The goal for the job seeker is to find a market problem and come up with a solution that will give the company a competitive edge.

"A resume begs a company to find a problem," says Weidenmiller. "A company can say, 'Oh you didn't do that!' Instead, a proposal says this is what I can do for you and if you say no, that's great. I'll go to your competition because I'm the one with the goods. I'm the one that has the ability that you need."

The idea, based on a New York Times best seller written by Weidenmiller's cofounder Pat Riley, is to put the ball back in the job seeker's court. To do so, Weidenmiller and Riley had to do their research.

Report: 2013 Had the Most Internet IPOs Since 2000

By sheer numbers, 2013 was the biggest year for Internet IPOs since the height of the dot-com era in 2000, though the amount raised was far less, according to one researcher.
Birinyi Associates reports that 26 Internet and social media companies went public in 2013, raising a total of $5.39 billion. If you invested in all 26, you would have enjoyed a 77.84% return on your investment. That compares to about a 40% ROI for Nasdaq.
Largely thanks to Facebook, the aggregate figure for Internet IPOs in 2012 was higher: $18.3 billion. However, just 17 such offerings existed that year. While you would have to trace back 13 years to find a comparable year for number of Internet IPOs this year, the dot-com era produced a much larger crop. In 2000, 89 companies went public, raising $9.58 billion. In 1999, that number was more than twice as high — 188 — which only raised $15.86 billion, still less than what was raised last year.

Netflix Lowers Streaming Price by $1

Aiming to add new members who received Apple TVs, Chromecasts or tablets over the holidays, Netflix has cut its streaming price to $6.99 for new members.
The deal, accessible via Netflix's signup page, lets you watch Netflix on one screen at a time. The two-screen option is $7.99, the price charged for the streaming-only service since 2011, when the company initiated a controversial program to separate streaming from its DVD-by-mail service.

Netflix reps could not be reached for comment on the new pricing. It's not clear whether current members can "downgrade" to the lower-cost plan. You could, of course, drop your existing account and sign up for a new one to enjoy the discount. (The one-screen option doesn't appear to be available for current members.)
The company traditionally sees a big bump in new subscribers in the fourth quarter, when consumers buy new devices with which they can stream the service. In the fourth quarter of 2012, Netflix added 2 million subscribers, double the previous quarter.
